Fairburn CC - A Recent History
Fairburn First XI is a very young team mixed with a few older more experienced players. The team is full of promise for the coming years as the younger players come of age.
Fairburn have profited well from the efforts of encouraging it's younger members. Fairburn is of the view that the young players when good enough should always play in place of those nearing the end of their "careers" or punishment. This has been very appealing to the youngsters and we have certainly got a good crop at the minute, which we hope can mature and win some trophies.
Sometimes regarded as the "nearly men", Fairburn have fallen just short on a number of occassions, being the bridesmaids to the league champions. Some of this can be put down to experience and to players taking holidays in the cricket season, for which they are fined, the staggering sum of one english pound. However, a tenacity and never say die attitude is developing, which will hopefully prove fruitiful in the coming years.
The 2007 season was again as mentioned above a nearly season. We had a very poor start, with a couple of injuries and absences, but once we hit the groove the victories began to come and we finished 3rd. In hindsight this was not a bad position to be in, all things considered.
The cup run was interesting to say the least, drawn against a team the division below, they were swept aside, as the opposition were skittled for 32 and we knocked them off in under 3 overs. All looked promising until the weather played havoc with the fixture list and some interesting decisions from up high, left us a little bemused and out of both cups. Perhaps it just wasn't to be.
in 2008, the club moved to the Pontefract & District Cricket League, and enjoyed immediate success winning the Division 3 title with 16 wins out of 18 completed games.
2009 sees promotion to Divison Two and therefore new unknown challenges, but with youth on their side, the first team are certainly a team going forward.
