Fairburn Calypso
fixtures
Welcome to the home of Fairburn Calypso, the over-rated, over-weight indoor six-a-side team. Fairburn Calypso have entered the Lordswood Indoor Cricket Championships for the past 7 years, and have established themselves in the Premier Division against some of the top clubs in the area. Here follow how Calypso do in their Autumn 2008 Campaign:
Game 1: Lost by 12 runs
Mark Abdy (captain), Simon Abdy, Guy Abdy, James Clegg, Craig Piggott, Ian Jones
Fairburn lost the toss and scored 108. Simon & Guy started well and set up the innings nicely with 34 runs of their 6 overs. Pair two was Clegg and Abdy, and after 2 overs they had only managed a profit of 2 runs, before settling down, to take the score to 67. Jonesy and Piggott came in and battled well to take the Final Calypso total to 107 = 4 points
In reply, Calypso got a wicket first ball, with Clegg attempting a stumping which was not given, before getting the ball to the bowlers end, to run out the non-facing batsman who had sprinted for a single. However, it was all down hill from there on, with the opening pair acheiving 50 after six overs. The second pair took the score to 100, leaving the last pair with an easy task. Calypso finally woke up for the last few overs, taking some vital wickets, whilst Clegg bowled a maiden against some rather obdurate batting. The late push was all in vain as Sicklinghall took the victory and 8 points.
Summary: 6/10 Fairburn let themselves down with some awful fielding and too many short-balls which virtually handed the game to Sicklinghall.

Game 2 : Won by 90 runs
Mark Abdy, Simon Abdy, James Clegg, Craig Piggott, Ian Jones, Gaz Weaver
Fairburn returned to winning ways with an outstanding demolition of Tady Magnets, who are an established indoor team. Batting first, Fairburn amassed 157, with the Abdy Brothers taking the score to 48; Clegg and Weaver taking it to 112, and Jones & Piggott taking it pass the 150 mark. In reply, all of Fairburn's bowlers performed to their full potential and beyond in some cases, limiting Tady to just 5 runs in 12 overs, until the last Tady Pair, which included ex-Yorkshire keeper Anthony Daniels, batted extremely well to add 60 for the last 6 overs.
Summary: 9.5/10 Excellent all-round performance by Fairburn. It will be hard to match these levels again, despite rumours of a possible guest appearance in the coming weeks
Game 3: Won by 20 runs
Mark Abdy, Simon Abdy, Guy Abdy, Craig Piggott, Ian Jones, James Clegg
Fairburn continued their impressive start to the indoor season. Fairburn put Barwick into bat. The first pair mustered only 24 runs from their 6 overs following some early good work from Fairburn. The second pair added only four runs to the total, as the inexperience of the indoor game began to show. The third pair needed to and did play well and only the tight death bowling from Mark Abdy stemmed the flow. The earlier excertions of the Fairburn players began to show as the bowlers began to bowl short, gifting easy runs to the opposition. Barwick finished with a competitive 82.
In reply, Guy and Simon were tasked with making a solid start to set up the reply. They did this despite some indecisive running they moved slowly but surely to 18. Skipper Mark and Clegg were pair two, they quickly hit their straps and began accumulating runs despite the odd fall of wicket which is inevitable in the indoor format. The pair took the total to 52. Craig and Taff needed 30 and this was comfortably achieved and 20 more runs added to earn the important bonus point.
7/10 A good performance but still room for improvement, we need to stop bowling as many short balls.
Game 5: Lost by 6 runs
Mark Abdy, Simon Abdy, Guy Abdy, Craig Piggott, Gaz Weaver, James Clegg
Fairburn lost a very close game and a game that Fairburn should have won. Kirk Deighton batted first and were soon under pressure with some good fielding. The first 8 overs went for no runs. The second pair started to get a bit of momentum and took the score to 21. The final pair hit the ball hard and took the score to 73.
In reply, Guy and Simon were cautious but got the score to 23 after 6 overs. Fairburn lost their way in the middle 6 overs, as good work was soon undone by the loss of a couple of wickets. James and Gareth only adding 8 to the total. With 43 still required Mark and Craig nurdled the bowling slowly building the score. In the penultimate over with only 1 required, Mark was bowled trying to flick the ball into the leg side. The score was built back to 2 needed off the last ball. Craig facing was bowled meaning consecutive defeats for the Calypso.
Game 6: Won by 60 Runs
Mark Abdy, Simon Abdy, Guy Abdy, Craig Piggott, Ian Jones, James Clegg
Fairburn got back into form destroying Sicklinghall. Skipper Mark won the toss and put the opposition in. Wickets were hard to come by early on and the Sicklinghall batsmen began to accumulate a decent score. After 12 Overs they had 104 runs. It wasn't until the final pair that the wickets began to fall. Mark who was shot by the sniper in his second over turned to bowling donkey drops and took 4 wickets in the over. Sicklinghall were pegged back and in the end managed 112 runs.
In reply brothers Mark and Simon opened and got a steady start making 34 with some good stroke play from Simon. Clegg and Guy were second pair and really got the run chase going as they added 73 in 6 overs. With the score almost reached Jonesy and Piglet smashed the ball around looking for bonus points and ended 167. A good win for Fairburn.
